Welcome to JOUR 7040. You will do all your assignments for this course on your own Wordpress blog that you will set up on the first day of class.
Why? There’s several advantages: first of all it keeps all your work in one place. It allows you to be creative in your presentation: you can use multiple media if you choose. While you can delete the blog at the end of the course you may wish to consider retaining it to show potential employers who want to see samples of your unedited work.
All your blogs will be linked to this RSS feed reader so that I, your instructor, can keep track of your assignments — and ensure you make your deadlines! I can also post specific feedback directly to you using the comments function on your blog - so make sure it is enabled.
Task: Facebook Group
You need to accept the invitation to join the HKBU-Jour7040 Facebook group. This is for class communications. Invitations will be dispatched on the first day of class. Please see me if you have NOT received an invitation by the weekend or are experiencing difficulties in signing up.
Task: Set up your blog at wordpress.com
Your blog will be set up using wordpress.com. Even if you have a personal blog, please set up a new one specifically for this class.
- Set the time/date function to UTC+8
- Ensure the previous posts widget is activated
- Ensure the pages widget is activated
BEAR IN MIND: Nothing really disappears from the internet. Even if you delete this blog at the end of the course, versions of it may still be cached somewhere. Therefore it may be possible that a future employer or an awkward subordinate may stumble across your blog years from now. It therefore may be wise to ensure that nothing on your blog (including poor spelling and grammar) is likely to cause you embarrassment in times to come! Post professionally. Use the spellcheck. Double check your grammar and punctuation.
Task: Fill in the “About” page
Include your full name, your nickname (if any), your e-mail address and write a few lines about yourself. Say where you went for your pre-semester reporting trip (New York, Cambodia, Prague etc). State whether you are in the Wednesday or Friday class. You may include a photo if you have one.
