April 3rd, 2009

Some notes:

You need to produce your final project with Dreamweaver and upload the webpages you create to your ftp account (ie http://www.ijs-global.com/class09/yourname)

Software

Dreamweaver - you can download this for a free one-month trial here from adobe.com

FTP - in class we used Fetch - this is for Macs only. You can download this for a free trial here . Other free FTP software programs are:

WS-FTP Le (windows only) - download it here

Filezilla (Mac and Windows) - download filezilla client here

To log on to your site using your ftp program

hostname: ijs-global.com OR ftp.ijs-global.com (this depends on the software)

user name: class09@ijs-global.com

password: hint - this year!

Audio Software:

Audacity is free and can be downloaded from here (both Macs and PCs)

You can convert audio files to MP3 via this website: http://media-convert.com/

Photo editing

Photoshop is expensive. There is a free online version with many of the program’s most useful tools here

Week 11 - March 31 - April 3

March 31st, 2009

PLEASE BRING HEADPHONES TO CLASS.

This is the penultimate class. There are no classes next week or the week after due to Easter holidays. The last classes will be on April 22 and 24.

Your soundslides are due BY THE END OF THIS CLASS - ie by 5.30 pm. I will allocate the final portion of class for those who have not finished them to complete them. This means you MUST have ALL your photos and audio ready to go before the class starts.

Don’t forget: the project should be about two minutes long. That requires about 24 photos (allow approximately 12 photos per minute).

Don’t forget to fill in the credits section and the headline. Please also pay attention to captions.

Once complete:

1. Please FTP it (using Fetch) to the web site of one member of your group (eg http://ijs-global.com/class09/yourname)

2. You will need to upload the whole “publish_to_web” folder.

3. Then post the link on each of your blogs accompanied by a standfirst (or introductory paragraph) and using a photo taken from your project for the link - see Tiara and Emily’s example here.

We will spend the first section of the class on audio editing using garageband. Some of you are already accomplished audio editors but some are not. So those with experience, please share your expertise with your class mates.

There is an excellent Garageband tutorial here.

Final Assignment

February 18th, 2009
REVISED DEADLINE: NOW APRIL 14, 2009
Continue thinking about your final project.
The theme this year is the impact of the financial crisis in Hong Kong. You will need to come up with a topic. For example: charities. Are they seeing donations fall? Education: are people extending/cutting short their education?
You will base it around the Hong Kong 2009-10 budget delivered on Feb 24.
Angles to consider:
  • what measures did the Financial Secretary invoke to help those in financial trouble?
  • What do those who are supposed to benefit think of them?
  • What do those who did not benefit think?
When the budget is unveiled we can discuss further angles.
This will be a multiple-media project using text, pictures, graphics and, if you wish, audio and/or video.
So think about which media best suits each aspect of your feature.
  • Will you use vox pop?
  • Will a graph explain some aspect of your story more succinctly than just words?
REMEMBER: THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISM COURSE SO YOU MUST TRANSLATE / VOICE-OVER ALL ELEMENTS INTO ENGLISH
You will produce it on your web site and link back to your blog.
We will discuss your progress in class over the next few weeks so be prepared!
The deadline for delivering your project is April 1 April 6. April 12. April 14.

Week 4 Assignments

February 10th, 2009

Your Cambodian/Prague assignments were due earlier. I will check the status.

Meanwhile, finish off processing your vox pop reports/or Lunar New Year. Post (on your individual blogs) a package that contains three to eight examples. We will assign editors to process the packages.

The vox pops DO NOT have to be identical within your group. It is up to you how you wish to structure the material your group has collected. If you collect additional vox pop material, you must share it with your group. You do not however have to share background or additional (non-vox pop) material that you have discovered yourself after class. Each individual should write/design/post the report separately. Deadlines: Tuesday Feb 17 (Weds class) or Thursday Feb 19 (Fri class) at 12 noon. So get as much as possible done in class.

You also need to start thinking about your final project. The theme this year is the impact of the financial crisis in Hong Kong. You will need to come up with a topic. For example: charities. Are they seeing donations fall? Education: are people extending/cutting short their education? We will discuss themes in class next week when I’ll give you the detailed requirements.
